The Pan-African Ornithological Congress is an independent organisation of professional and dedicated amateur ornithologists, the aims and purposes of which are to study African birds and promote their conservation, to foster the appreciation of birds and discuss the relation between birds and man, and to disseminate information on African birds through international meetings and publications. To make the Tenth Pan-African Ornithological Conference, to be held in 2000, as comprehensive and representative as possible, the following questions will be addressed: (1) What ornithological research is currently conducted in the different African countries, and how can it be represented most adequately at PAOC10? (2) What are the main institutions conducting ornithological research in Africa, and what problems do they face in fulfilling this task? (3) What action could be taken by the Pan-African Ornithological Congress to help ensure the long-term continuity of these research programs?
