Bock, W.J. & Violani, C. 1999. Meeting of the standing committees on vernacular names of birds. In: Adams, N.J. & Slotow, R.H. (eds) Proc. 22 Int. Ornithol. Congr., Durban: 3173. Johannesburg: BirdLife South Africa.

Committees have been established to prepare lists of vernacular names for the birds of the world in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. These lists of French and Italian names, as well as Russian, Chinese and Japanese names have already been published. Members of these committees are invited to present the progress of their work and to discuss how the activities of these several committees can be coordinated better. Of special interest are the plans of the various committees to publish their lists. Persons interested in preparing lists of vernacular names of birds in other languages are invited to attend and to present the results of their work.
